Review
of the book by April Masini on dating ideas for both men and women

| With the emergence of the
Internet as a new tool to find a
relationship, there is something else that is happening - the first date does not happen for a really long time. Remember the old days? If you are not old enough, then talk to your parents or go watch an old movie. A date was the only way two people could really get to know each other first. Sometimes it would be just a drink or a trip to a local event together.

What is happening now is that people are using technology (email, instant messaging, video chat, telephone calls, etc.) now to communicate for a long time and only if they feel that it is good idea to take the relationship to the next level, they schedule a date. So the first date in such a situation becomes really a big deal.

In this context, the latest book 50 First Dates by
April
Masini, the relationships expert, is very timely and useful. In the old days, since the first date was only for introductions, if you screwed up (unless you screwed up big time), you could still hope to meet again. The expectations from the date were low and people were more forgiving. Not any more. Now that so much time has elapsed since you first "met" and the first date, you better get it right. Or else, she wouldn't see you again, ever.

Masini starts off with the basics for both men and women - you know the stuff that you might know well but still keep forgetting. Or sometimes, you have been out of the dating scene for many years and you try to date using the old techniques, which when they don't work, make you wonder that something is wrong with you. In reality, it is just that the times have changed and you need to change your dating strategy. Masini's books brings out those points very well if you are in the dating market right now. For instance, it is expected that you will be
feminine and sexy rather than that neutral look that was so popular in the 90s.

The book 50 First Dates divides the dates into four categories:
- The Active Date (hiking, dance
class, etc.)
- The Artsy-Smartsy Date (concert, pottery class, etc.)
- Dates that are Pure Fun (amusement park, bowling, etc.)
- Dates for the Budget Minded (window shopping, beach combing, etc.)
Then almost like a Dummy's guide, Masini has made it easy on us. She describes each detail so that almost anyone can get it right. Here is how she provides details on each dating idea:
|
- Setting the Stage
- Devil’s in the details:
- What to
eat/drink
- What sounds to
hear
- Do you need to bring anything, and if so,
what
- Conversation
starters
- The right dress for her and
him
- Any gifts
- How to sexify
it
