Presidential election

How to maintain your sanity and relationship?

The other day I was having a haircut and the topic turned to a current politician.  Almost immediately, my hairdresser commented that it was their spa policy not to discuss politics and personal matters with clients.  I understood exactly what she meant.  I immediately switched to finding her opinion on the new Japanese restaurant in town.

There is a reason why the spa has instituted a policy that their employees do not discuss political issues with their clients in the workplace.  Apart from the stress generated by political discussion (after all a spa is place to relax, not to get all charged up), it is not easy for most of us to engage in meaningful discussion about politically charged issues without getting emotional.

But what happens when a couple has rather different political opinions?  A wife who went to a liberal arts college and believes in a woman's right to choose but gets married to a otherwise good (but conservative) man who happens to believe that women should simply shut up and listen when men talk - and then do what they are told.  (Related: Heather Schmid composes song for Hillary Clinton)

This is a very delicate situation and here is how to deal with it:

  • Set boundaries for political discussion.  It is fine to have a chat after dinner in the family room but not on the dining table or in bed.

  • Do not take it personally.  After all, these are merely opinions.

  • When things get heated up, take a break.  Try to resume the discussion later on.  After all you don't make a living from politics.

  • And finally, if politics is so important to you, mention it to your profile when you are dating.
