Where to go shopping in New York City?

Take a look at the list of fashionable stores for the rest of us

We strongly recommend that you spend some time on Fifth Avenue and even pay a visit to stores like Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Versace, Gucci, and Escada, but unless you are Paris Hilton, you will be able to do only part of your shopping at these boutiques.  But don't lose heart.  A new set of stores in the area actually sells very trendy clothes at highly affordable prices.  Based on our research (and actual shopping by our staff), below is the list of stores that we like:

H&M:  This chain of apparel stores (for both men and women) is rapidly expanding worldwide, including in Asia. While they do have their stand-alone shops, some of the malls now have these stores too. In our research, though, for some reasons we concluded that their shops in New York City seem to be much better in selection than those in other cities. There are a few H&M stores around New York City and the biggest one is on Fifth Avenue.  The main selling points of H&M are trendy clothes, wide selection of sizes, high quality, and unbeatable prices. If you are looking for moderate prices, you may want to go to 34th street at both sides of 5th avenue; perhaps not the trendiest and most unique street in the city, but the one where regular New Yorkers shop for fashionable clothing.   The store has an extensive selection for men.

Zara:  This retail stores chain, originally from Spain, has high quality clothes with good cuts that characterize the European style clothes and medium range prices. Zara stores sell clothes that are trendy, but still with a more classic touch. Their stores are on 5th avenue and 34th Street.  A whole floor is dedicated to men's apparel.

Mexx:  This store comes from Sweden. The clothes are trendy, but still very casual. We will not call it a store for teenagers since the prices/styles are definitely for adults but the clothes are definitely for those women who want to look younger and modern. The clothes are of good quality, have good cut, and manufactured from good materials. They also have wonderful jeans. Most apparel items are moderately priced.  These stores have excellent choices for men.  Update:  This shop is now closed.

Strawberry:  This is another chain of apparel stores. There are a few ofZara store in New York city shows it external view with large windows and mannquins. them in different parts of the city including 34th street and 57th street (between 5 and 6 avenues). They carry trendy clothes at much lower prices than department stores. They also have a large selection of casual clothes in most sizes. The stores are very neatly organized but since the selection is so huge, you have to make sure you have enough time to shop there.  The store does not have a selection for men.
