It is not always easy to find an appropriate gift for someone special in your life, for example, your significant other. Since men generally do not have much knowledge about what women like, they have a very hard time picking a gift that their girlfriend or spouse will like.  (Related article:  Jewelry and earrings as gifts)

Joseph in Brooklyn, New York, writes, “I want to give a spa gift certificate to my wife. How do I select the best service for her? To me everything seems great. And how do I select a spa?"  (Related: Gift for a single woman)

Your wife has a wonderful husband. She will be very happy with a gift certificate to a spa or day spa. The difference between these two is that at a spa, people can stay for several days or even weeks and a day spa is only for one day, but some day spas offer multi-day packages in collaboration with nearby hotels.  You may choose to give your wife a single service such as a massage or facial, a package that may include several services or a series of spa treatments.

Spa Services
There is a great variety of spa services and it keeps growing, because spas change some standard services to make them unique to their spas. The most common spa services offered at the spas are:

Massages
There are a few types but the regular massage is best if your wife is new to this experience. Massages are great to relax especially if your wife has been under a lot of stress or demanding physical activities. Jamie-Lynn Singer, a big fan of spa treatments, says that any kind of treatment is a healing process.  "Being at a spa you have to force yourself to shut off," she says.  Some people feel uncomfortable with massages because they do not like the idea that a stranger will touch them and see them naked. During my decades in the spa industry, I saw a lot of this, but after the massage I never saw anyone saying that they did not enjoy the experience. On the other hand, they all said that they loved massages. If your wife does not want a male massage therapist, she may request a female when making the reservation. This is a great way to get over the reluctance to visit a day spa or a medi spa.

Other types of massages are:

Shiatsu: A Japanese massage
Reiki: A Very light massage is kind of New Age.
Lymphatic massage: This is more of a treatment to eliminate toxins from the body rather than a massage and it is light.
Stone massages: Done with stones. Usually more costly. They use heated stones during the massage and most people find them very relaxing.
Reflexology: This is a feet massage based on the Chinese technique. Although it is done only on the feet, it actually relaxes the whole body.  (Related:  How to take care of your feet)
