Soaps for dry skin
Pick your soap carefully because a poorly picked soap can further dry up your skin

By Akiko Tanaka

One of my biggest problems was my skin. It always seemed too dry. One thing I discovered on a trip to the Middle East was a natural soap made from olive oil. It is made in very large blocks and shipped to individual merchants in bazaars; the Arabic word for bazaar is suq, pronounced "sook." Merchants cut up the blocks into individual bars, which are sold by weight.   (Related article:  Arabian beauty secrets)

The soap has an olive drab color. It doesn't lather up like American soaps, but it does cleanse very well without drying skin. It leaves little or no scent. It doesn't contain any additives so it is not an anti-perspirant or deodorant bar. Very similar soaps are made in Greece.  (Related article:  Skincare by skin type)

An American brand is available and sold under the brand name "Kiss My Face." However, it is a very soft and short-lived bar, only lasting me about a week. (I shower at least once every day.) These bars last a bit longer.  (Related:  Cold weather skincare)

While in France I discovered a soap made from - (take a deep breath) - goat's milk. It may not sound very appetizing so don't eat it; bathe with it. It is by far the gentlest cleansing bar I have ever used. Like virtually all French-milled soaps, it is of an extremely fine quality. The brands I've tried have a fresh, clean scent, that is un-noticeable if you wear any perfume.  (Related article:  Skincare for dry skin during winter)

Like olive oil soap, it's not full of artificial ingredients to make a lot of lather. Sold under the "Cardinal Farms" brand name, it is available in the US and elsewhere by special order. This particular variety is made in Canada using French techniques. In French it is called Savon au Lait de Chevre, quite simply "Goat's Milk Soap."
