Use of injectable fillers to improve skin texture

Using dermal fillers

We have been discussing injectable fillers.  First, we discussed Botox and in this part we will talk about other injectable fillers that fall into the category of dermal fillers.  When we age we lose fat in some areas of our faces. The dermal fillers can fill those deflated areas. The fillers can also fill some wrinkles and add volume in the lips. Some of them have been with us for long time while others are new.

While administering injectable fillers, the doctor or the nurse will first clean the area. In some cases he or she will apply a numbing agent. The doctor will then introduce the product in the targeted areas. Most of these products will leave your skin red and swollen depending on the products for a few hours or even a couple of days.

There are many types of fillers, some with temporary results while others with almost permanent results. Among the most widely used fillers are:  (Related article: Minimally invasive plastic surgery)
Collagen:  Collagen has been used for a long time. Among the most common brands in the USA are CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast. The inflammation and redness is minimal and it can be covered with make-up. You will see instant results and the effects will last from 3 to 5 months. The cost, depending where you have the treatment, can be from $300 to $600 per treated area.

Hyaluronic Acid:  There are many dermal filler brands that use this naturally occurring acid as the main ingredient. The best known are Captique, Hylafrom Plus, Jevecerm and Restylane.  Restylane is the most well known. The effects last from 6 to 8 months or more. It costs somewhere from $600 to $1,200 per treated area.  (Related:  Revanesse)

Captique: It lasts from 4 to 6 months and it costs from $600 to $1,000 per treated area.

Silicone fillers:  In the USA the FDA has not approved these fillers yet but they are still used by many doctors. The effects are permanent and its cost is lower than any other filler. The downside is that the filling can move to other areas in the face. It can also form bumps. It is difficult to correct if there are mistakes and the body can reject it.  There are many types of silicon fillers and none of them is FDA approved for use in aesthetic treatments at this time.

Radiesse This is semi-permanent filler. Its results can last from 2 to 3 years. Just like fat transfer, the filler can move in the face and create a non-desirable effect, such as bumps. Full results are seen after 2 weeks. It costs from $100 to $2,000 per treatment.

Fat transfer:  This sounds great. Get the extra fat from the butt or tummy and put it in the face, hands or neck, wherever it is needed. It has been used for long time and since it is your own fat, the body does not reject it. Fat transfer has two downsides:

  • The doctor has to extract the fat from another part of the body first, usually through liposuction. There are a few types of liposuction procedures to extract the fat cells. Then the doctor can transfer the fat to other parts of the body.
  • The other disadvantage of fat transfer is that the body reabsorbs some of the fat and it is difficult for the doctor to estimate how much fat will be reabsorbed, and therefore, the final volume. The doctor will put more fat than needed, and in the beginning, you will have more volume than desired. Because of this, the doctor may need to repeat the procedure to add more fat. The fat is extracted only once and the doctor preserves extra fat for this purpose or for further use in your body.
