Do-it-yourself detox program
What is it, how to do it, and what to be careful about?

By Lindisima Team

Summary:  Detox is a very popular treatment and it is something that you can try.  In this series of articles, we are discussing complete details on detox programs and how you can do it at home yourself if you do not wish to or can not afford to go to a detox center.  We have provided a brief introduction to detox already.  Now we discuss more details on the detox programs.

What is difference between detox and fasting?

Fasting is a form of detox. During most detox diets, you take some substances or supplements that may act as laxatives or cleansers. Usually you will eat more and healthier than in a fasting system.

Who should have a detox diet?

They are especially popular because many people believe they accelerate the metabolism, and therefore, help to lose weight. It is also believed that they make the skin look healthier and younger.

The opinion on who should follow a detox diet are divided. Some practitioners, and this may include trainers, nutritionists, alternative medicine practitioners and some doctors, recommend them to people trying to lose weight or improve overall physical performance. They can also be recommended as part of a treatment to cure illnesses or improve certain conditions.

People who suffer from acne and other skin conditions, allergies, frequent colds, gastritis, congestion, lack of energy, and sleep problems can also benefit from a detox system. Based on this long list, it seems that most of us can use it.

Who should not follow a detox diet?

In general anybody with any physical condition or taking medication should not follow a detox diet without consulting a doctor, particularly if they have problems with kidneys, heart, liver, etc.. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not follow a detox diet either.

What are the risks?

These are short-term diets so there are not major risks. However, some people may experience fatigue or headaches but the symptoms generally go away pretty quickly.

Does it work?

Well, there are always people in favor and people against everything. There are no studies proving that it works either way.

How to do a detox yourself?

Most practitioners recommend them once or twice a year unless they are part of a treatment. In general, it is better to go to a practitioner so he or she can identify the best detox for you. You can also do it yourself.

As a beginner you may want to follow a simple detox first. If you do not feel OK, stop immediately. There are many websites and books with detailed explanations of the different diets and aids.
