| China and South Korea are two countries where cosmetic surgery is exploding among both women and men (where feminine look - like that of Zhou Yumin - is more popular among men). As happens in such cases, a lot of incompetent surgeons have entered this highly lucrative business and it is not just limited to using sub-standard practices or operating in unhygienic clinics. They are also engaging in procedures that are considered too risky - or even ridiculous - by western physicians. |
| One of these procedures is the so-called "leg extension surgery." As pointed out in a separate article, cosmetic foot surgery is a good example - recommended for extremely rare cases for purely medical reasons but not for cosmetic reasons. | |
| There is no doubt (and several studies that support that conclusion) that taller people are considered more attractive and often do well in life - all the way from getting good jobs/promotions/higher salaries to earning respect of people around them and marrying more attractive partners. Leg extension surgery is, therefore, a way for Chinese people to increase their height. |
| How is this procedure performed? The surgeon will first break (that's right) your leg and inserts steel pins into the bones, just below the knee. Then over the course of six months or more, the two leg pieces are gradually pushed apart so that new bone fills the gap. During this period, you may not be able to walk normally and may not be able to run like a normal person for the rest of your life. (Related: Toe shortening surgery) So our recommendation is that unless your physician recommends it for medical reasons, don't even think about it - no wonder the Chinese Government has since banned the procedure except in rare medical cases. There are other simpler ways to increase your height when you are growing up. | |
