| - | Plastic Surgery in ArgentinaWhat should you know before going? By Pierre Coda | You might have heard of lipotourism and the controversy surrounding it. In my opinion, a lot of it was probably generated by plastic surgeons in the United States who see their business gradually eroding as clinics in other parts of the world - particularly Mexico, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cost Rica, Belgium, Thailand, Belgium, and India - steal their business. | | | I do agree that not all clinics in other countries are good and some are even operated by crooks, but so is the case in the United States. We have our own fair share of crooks and frauds. Just watch any episode of MFI: Medical Fraud Investigators on Discovery Health Channel. So you have to do your due diligence on any clinic - no matter where it is located. (Related: Offshore plastic surgery) In that context, I wanted to mention Argentina's attractiveness as a destination for plastic surgery. Since it is a Spanish speaking country, the cosmetic surgeons there have been more aggressively courting the Latino population in the United States that is now discovering plastic surgery. Plenitas has launched a business that provides several medical-tourism packages for Argentina. What attracted my attention was their Breast Implant & Tango Package that includes private tango dance lessons with silicone implants (not approved in the United States but likely to be approved soon). "The highlight of this package is a “new you” and a tango dinner dance show at the world famous La Esquina de Carlos Gardel,” the company says. | | | | And a word of warning to Hispanic interested in plastic surgery abroad. Florida plastic surgeon Jorge A. Perez recently said that you should beware of discount cosmetic procedures done by substandard doctors no matter where they are. "The Latin community loves plastic surgery," Perez said. "But very often, they're not as careful [as other Americans]. ... They have a naïve trust of anyone in a white coat." In other words, just because Argentina is a Spanish speaking country, do not underestimate the power of research prior to your decision to go under the knife. | | |
