Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty
When should you have, what does it cost, and what to expect

Summery:  A tummy tuck is now a very common procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower tummy region and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall (Direct fat excision).  For those women and men that have a pot-belly or a protruding tummy, a tummy tuck procedure can dramatically reduce it.  (Related article:  Liposuction and tummy tuck combination)

Who should have a tummy tuck procedure?

A tummy makes perfect sense for two types of candidates (i) Women who have extra fat and/or skin around the tummy after pregnancy or (ii) Women and men who have lost a lot of weight or nothing else has worked for them to reduce the tummy size.  A rule of thumb is that if you are on a diet/exercise program to lose weight, complete your program first to the maximum extent possible and only then wrap things up by having a tummy tuck.

Of course, you will have a much slimmer waist but do not forget that such surgery will leave some scars despite tremendous improvement in plastic surgery technology.  (Related:  Botox for scars)Depending on your individual situation, the scars can take years to go away and some minor scars may always remain.  This can significantly limit the type of revealing dresses that you can wear.  (Related:  Circumferential abdominoplasty)

The surgery can last for several hours, and while in some cases you may be allowed to go home, in others you may stay in a hospital for a few days.  Your plastic surgeon will make that determination.

You will experience varying levels of discomfort for days/weeks and it might take a few months before you will look/feel normal.  It can take up to a year to look totally normal.

Your doctor will work with you to determine an exercise program and I expect that if you are going to spend thousands of dollars on a tummy-tuck you will take the advice seriously and make permanent changes in your lifestyle:  food, exercise, and style.

Remember that a tummy tuck does not change you or allow you to eat whatever you want, but it is a good start to a new life.  It is a good procedure to correct the damage caused by pregnancies and being obese but there is a small price to pay in terms of extra care for months.  If you are ready for it, then go for it.
