Aromatherapy treatments for depression

How to pick an essential oil that suits you?

While depression is a medical condition that requires treatment from a qualified professional, many people suffer only from mild depression just once in a while. For people like you, it is not a bad idea to explore alternative forms of treatment.  Apart from many other non-prescription drug treatments, the one that is very easy to try is aromatherapy. In aromatherapy it is believed that the sense of smell is very powerful and directly connected to our brain, and therefore, to the hormonal activity in the body. Based on this logic, we can balance our hormones by simply using the right set of essential oils.

As I said above, although aromatherapy cannot fix the root of the emotional problem (Emotional intimacy) that may be causing depression, it can definitely give you a boost. Aromatherapy can also help you relax, feel energetic when you are feeling low, and create a general feeling of well being. Of course, if you are suffering from minor depression, you need to find why you are feeling like that and deal with the issues, but while you do that, you can get some temporary relief from essential oils.

How to use essential oils?

You can use essential oils by burning them. For this you will need to buy an essential oil diffuser or burner. While inexpensive burners are available easily, many online shops actually carry a wider choice of very pretty burners. We recommend that you buy something that looks good so that it also becomes an item of decoration in your room. You will use the burner to burn a few drops of essential oils and let it fill the area and then turn it off.

You may also want to add a few drops of essential oils to your toiletries, such as your body lotion or soap. You can either buy these products with an essential oil or buy neutral or fragrance-free products and then add your own oils.

Essential oils influence every individual differently. Therefore, you can pick one or two that you seem to like the most, but buy only a small volume the first time. If you like it then you can order more; otherwise, you can try another one. Below is a list of common essential oils that cheer up anyone's spirits:

Bergamot. This Italian citrus plant has stimulating and antidepressant properties. It has a pleasant, sweet, and fruity smell, but not too sweet or overpowering, and that is why even men like its aroma.

Rose. This is one of the most expensive essential oils in the market, but its fragrance is so pleasant that it is worth it even if you buy it diluted in other oils. Aromatherapists believe that rose gives a sense of security and happiness. While it may seem somewhat feminine, but many men like the aroma too.

Rosewood. This oil is indicated to treat stress, nervousness, anxiety, and sadness. It has a pleasant, sweet, and somewhat woody fragrance.

Sandalwood. This is an essential oil used in yoga and in many Hindu temples. It is indicated to treat anxiety, nervousness, and depression. Sandalwood paste is often used in India to calm the spirits by applying on the forehead.

Orange, tangerine, mandarin, lemon and lime.  All these citric smells help in cases of sadness, irritability, lack of energy, and depression. These are also some of the lower priced oils.
