What to do if you have mesothelioma?
Help and support information for victims of mesothelioma

By Peter Foss

If you are reading this article, you are probably already suffering from mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) or have a loved one from suffering from it.  But if you have been exposed to any asbestos containing products in the past, this is a good page to see if you might be suffering from it and how to find out.  Since mesothelioma is caused by poorly developed products, the companies that produced these products are liable and you can file a lawsuit to demand compensation.

Are you sure if you don't have mesothelioma?
  • Only a proper medical examination can tell you that but if you ever worked in a facility that had asbestos or have/had a family member that did so, you may be at risk.  The symptoms sometimes do not appear for years and are often mistaken as symptoms of other illnesses.
  • If you do not recall if anyone who lived with you while you were a child and worked with asbestos, it is best to ask them, or if they are dead, you must start an investigation to find out by talking to their living family members and by researching the companies that they worked for.
  • If you smoke, you are at higher risk for mesothelioma.
  • Some common symptoms of mesothelioma are cough (that never seems to go away), fatigue, weight loss, etc.  A doctor can do a series of tests to determine if you are at risk or already have the disease.

What are your legal options?

  • There are dozens of law firms, lawyers, support groups, and non-profit organizations that can point you in the right direction.  So start your research right away since all of them have excellent websites that provide you with all the things that you will need in order to file a claim for compensation.
  • Since the legal mess due to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses has led many companies to declare bankruptcies and politicians have gotten involved, the whole thing is in serious turmoil.  It is best to work with an attorney that you can trust and know for sure that s/he will work in your best interest.  Fro my analysis, it seems that companies and politicians are doing everything that they can to deny you what you deserve because you were forced to use a product that was not safe.
  • The courts have been generally supportive of mesothelioma patients and have been pushing the businesses to do whatever it takes to settle the claims and provide appropriate compensation.
  • It is also important for you to find the right doctor to work with you.  Since there has been some kind of a 'get-rich-quick' scheme going on using mesothelioma cases, you must be very careful, trust your own judgment (while taking the advice of good lawyers and doctors), and do what it takes to get your life back.
