How to organize your closets?

Tips on making your life easy

If only we had the time to organize everything we would have no mess. The reality is that we rarely have the time to organize everything every day and end up with a mess so very often. So the next best thing (to being organized every single day) is to organize regularly, say every month or every quarter. Any longer than that and you are talking of starting a project that will be difficult to execute without too much pain.  Here are a few things you can do to organize your closets:

Review all your clothes and make three piles: keep definitely, in doubt, and ready for donation.  Review the "definitely keep" pile and check if any items needs repair. If so, get it done or write down when/how you will fix it. Everything in this pile should be ready to wear.   Review the second pile and see if you really need all those items. Remember that most clothing these days is designed to be in fashion for just one season. And while fashion does return, by the time it comes back, this outfit may not fit you, may look old, or by that time something better/cheaper may be available. If they are seasonal, put them separately. Review to make sure that everything is ready to wear. If during the next six months you still have the clothes in this pile it may mean that these clothes are ready to be donated to the Salvation Army.  (Related:  How to decorate a guestroom?)
The above is particularly important when it comes to shoes. Some expensive shoes are worth keeping for years, but not all, and if they are not comfortable and you cannot use them, there is no reason to keep them. There are always better uses for items that you do not use. You may be able to sell them, or even better, donate them.

Separate seasonal items and keep them in a place where you store household stuff. If you lack closet space, you can put them in plastic bins in other parts of the house, like the attic or the basement.

Now group your clothes either by function: work, workout, day, night etc. or buy type: pants, blouses, tops, etc.

Create sections in your closets to put the different groups together. Try to keep it together so you do not waste time finding items when you need them. So if you work and need to get dressed in a hurry each morning, it is best to organize your clothes accordingly.  (Related:  How to declutter)

If you want your closet to look even better you need to use the same type of hangers. If all hangers are of one type, everything will hang at the same height. That is why spending some time in your closet getting dressed may be pleasant experience.
