Japanese Makeup trends
Tips and advice for women

By Eimi Graham

If you have traveled to Japan, you may have seen young females with heavy makeup and kogal-style clothing.  Maybe you have also seen females wearing suits and even more makeup on. In Japan, like anywhere else, the style of makeup varies between people.  Here are some trends of makeup in Japan these days.

Eyebrows

In the 80's, thick eyebrows were popular. Then after that thin eyebrows became popular and now eyebrows that have a natural width are popular.  Still some kogals have thin eyebrows.  Because many people dye their hair in Japan, they seem to lighten up their eyebrows as well using colored mascara

Ganguro

A couple of years ago, kogals that had extremely dark tans and white make-up were on the streets, but the kogals now seem to not have an obsession with extremely tanned skin.  Some actually prefer a natural skin color and even if they get a tan, it is not extremely dark.

Eye make-up

Colored mascaras are popular these days. Even people who are older than the typical kogal generation would be using brown mascara.  Black is still popular, but glitter mascaras, blue, dark purple mascaras, etc. would be in the stores too.

Lipstick

Now many people choose a lipstick that matches with them.  Light pink that has a touch of beige in it is very popular. Many people prefer using lip gloss too.  The kogals wear more "shiny" lipsticks. Pink with a touch of beige or a color close to beige (sometimes with glitter in it) is often worn by kogals.   (Related article:  How to choose the right makeup color?)

If it's your first time to Japan, you may think that some people are going to a party because many people wear heavy makeup even if they're just going shopping or walking their kids to school. I personally think that makeup these days is better than the 80's.  I've seen some Japanese celebrity pictures that were taken in the 80's, but a lot of people's lipsticks didn't match their skin tone. Also, not a lot of people had brown hair and their eyebrows were thick.  I think that the Japanese have learned what's natural in makeup.
