Experiences with dating on the Internet
What works, what doesn't, and how we can now pick our mate

By Linda Jackson

Well, I am at the 6-month mark in my foray into Internet dating. I told myself that at the half-anniversary mark I would take stock of my experiences and decide whether to continue or to stop. Surprise – I want to do both!

Background on me: 45 year old female, one grown child, ready to get out there and do things, even at a moment’s notice (with baby all grown up).  No hang-ups with passionate physical intimacy (like), drugs (don’t like) or rock and roll (love). Emotionally mature. Short, cute, slightly chunky, killer smile, superior sense of humor. Good job, involved in my community, involved in night school, etc.. Still have a lot of time of my hands.

I ask  – who wouldn’t want to be with me? Well, so far about 350 men; that’s who!

The first month, I did everything wrong. The first mistake was not researching into the OLD world at all. My online profile was boring, I kept my picture hidden, and I sat back and waited for the bees to come collect their honey. Doh!

Then I got smart and researched profile writing, do’s/don’ts, got my picture up there, and then – sat back and waited for …. Doh! (Related article:  How to write a personal ad?)

Month 3 – got even smarter and emailed anyone who was interesting. It’s obvious that not many of the men have done their research because I noticed that at least, and no exaggeration, 75% of the profiles said basically the same things.

Month 4 – finally, I connect with one guy who really rings my bell (on email, at least). Over two-month period, we have gotten to know each other, have had some dates and did the horizontal boogie. This is where I wonder [is it time to stop?] and then I realize that I’m still not sure if he’s the “one”, so I have to also keep my options open for now.

And that’s the problem with OLD: everyone seems to be keeping their options open, even after meeting their “match”, even after getting what they asked for. It’s like we’re all in this huge candy store and sampling before we buy. Of course, there is so much to sample when dating on the Internet so it will take us a while.

I will take stock again in 6 months and decided then – will I stop or continue! Stay tuned!
