Why should you have a prenup?

Be realistic and avoid conflict and aggravation

A German member of parliament Gabriele Pauli has suggested a seven year marriage contract and if a couple wants to stay together after that they should renew their vows. Considering a 50% failure rate in marriage, this is clearly a very interesting, but definitely controversial proposal. Most people do not want to think that they will ever get a divorce but the rising popularity of prenuptial agreements does show that some couples are getting realistic about it.

There is also additional evidence that indicates that your marriage may not last till your death despite the vow that you make. According to latest census figures, for the first time since the Second World War, people who married in the late seventies had a less than even chance of still being married 25 years later.

The message here is that you should be positive, do your best to make your marriage work, but also be realistic by having a prenup. Also if you see any signs of trouble in your marriage, it is best to seek immediate professional help to fix the problem. If after doing your best, things still do not work, then, don't drag it. Make the divorce as painless as possible and try to stay civil with your ex, especially if you have children together.

Just because you have a legal agreement that clearly spells out what happens in case of a problem in your marriage, it does not mean that you are not romantic enough or doubt in any way that your marriage will not survive.  We rarely use the same argument for agreements and living wills.
