Smoking during pregnancy causes ADHD in kids
Karen Markussen Linnet, Kirsten Wisborg, Carsten Obel, Niels Jrgen Secher, Per Hove Thomsen, Esben Agerbo, and Tine Brink Henriksen, researchers at Aarhus University in Copenhagen, in a research paper entitled "Smoking During Pregnancy and the Risk for Hyperkinetic Disorder in Offspring," say that women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
ADHD treatments are very controversial and drugs that are used to treat ADHD, particularly among children, have serious side effects. Adderall XR was recalled in Canada after reports of deaths, though the FDA has refused to act. Cylert was also recalled but other ADHD drugs like Ritalin and Prozac are still available. In fact, Shire Pharmaceuticals is actually working to launch an Adderall patch in the US.
