Atkins Diet damages the heart
We had discussed earlier that the Atkins Diet was no longer as popular as it was at one time. Now there may be another reason to abadon it. Professor Kieran Clarke of the Cardiac Metabolism Research Group has discovered the first evidence that the Atkins Diet directly affects the heart in its ability to store energy. This is the first study to show that high fat-low carb diets have direct effects on the heart.
Professor Peter Weissberg, Medical Director at the BHF, said: "Diet devotees can be reassured that this research in no way suggests that a high fat-low carb regime is going to give them heart failure. However, they should be aware that extreme, unbalanced, diets are a major insult on their bodies’ metabolism and, as this study indicates, may have direct effects on their hearts. We would certainly not recommend high fat-low carb diets to anyone who wants to lose weight and look after their heart."
In other words, time to look at other diets like South Beach Diet, Bob Greene's Diet, and Zone Diet.
